summary: LOVE MANIACS! is a collection of four short stories, each with a different theme but all about high school girls in love.
PYTHAGORAS no MAKE
saotome ami wears too much make-up, but it’s ok since she’s doing it for kioka-senpai, her boyfriend, who seems to like it. trouble starts with criticism from her teachers, followed by akechi-kun, known as the pythagoras of the heisei era, seeming to constantly get in her way when she’s all lovey-dovey with kioka-senpai, to…?
sakura no saku mae ni
sayumi and yuzuru have been together pretty much all of their lives, so it’s almost unthinkable that they’ll be separated once they graduate from middle school (to attend separate high schools). because yuzuru seems to refuse all gifts and letters handed directly to him by the girls in school, they’ve figured out that they sure-fire way for him to accept them is through sayumi… which she delivers dutifully enough. but sayumi has feelings for him, too, despite all of her protests….
bokura wa koisuru hoshi no shita
fukushi yuri’s boyfriend had just broken up with her during the winter of 2nd year middle, and she’s been making bentou for him packed with a letter so that they can hopefully make up. when her bentou gets messed up by a mis-aimed snowball, the snowball’s target offers to trade lunches with her. said target is a fairly mature 6th grader, and as he tells her the bentou was delicious and offering her some words of encouragement (having read the letter intended for yuri’s bf), she makes him more lunches…
asshuku EMOTION
hisaya is one year younger than kosome, his neighbor and childhood friend, but he’s pretty strict with his criticisms of her. one day, he accidentally drops his journal and kosome pics up… she learns quite a few things about him while reading it..!
commentary: it’s been so long since i’ve read anything under nakayoshi! the stories are still so adorable. granted, the third story may have been just a little too bubbly (and the girl still speaks like a 2nd grader), but i suppose that’s how we get the mature kid as a contrast. the second and fourth stories deal with childhood friends, which the mangaka deal with in such a warm and fuzzy way (i’m for it!). unfortunately, i didn’t like the first story quite so much… i know the pythagoras is supposed to be such a genius, but the whole math whiz thing just went a little overboard in the story. the mangaka seems to like putting in quite a few emoticons as part of the dialogue/text, and each of the stories have their crazy and loud “the character has snapped” moments.
